Understanding chronic kidney disease

The Silent Invader: Understanding Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in India Imagine your body as a bustling city, and your kidneys as its most efficient water treatment plants. Day in and day out, these two bean-shaped organs work tirelessly, filtering about 170 litres of blood, removing waste, excess water, and toxins. They also play a vital […]

General Questions

What is Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)?

Chronic kidney disease refers to the gradual loss of kidney function over time. Your kidneys filter wastes and excess fluids from your blood, which are then excreted in your urine. When chronic kidney disease reaches an advanced stage, dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and wastes can build up in your body.

What are the stages of CKD?

CKD is classified into five stages based on your glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which measures how well your kidneys are filtering blood:

  • Stage 1: Kidney damage with normal GFR (90 or above)
  • Stage 2: Mild decrease in GFR (60-89)
  • Stage 3: Moderate decrease in GFR (30-59)
  • Stage 4: Severe decrease in GFR (15-29)
  • Stage 5: Kidney failure (GFR less than 15)
What causes CKD?

The two main causes of chronic kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure, which are responsible for up to two-thirds of cases. Other conditions that can lead to CKD include glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, prolonged obstruction of the urinary tract, recurrent kidney infection, and certain autoimmune disorders.

Treatment Questions

What is dialysis and how does it work?

Dialysis is a treatment that filters and purifies the blood using a machine. It helps maintain the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance when the kidneys can no longer perform these functions. There are two main types: hemodialysis, which uses an artificial kidney to filter blood outside the body, and peritoneal dialysis, which uses the lining of your abdomen to filter blood inside the body.

How long does a dialysis treatment take?

A typical in-center hemodialysis treatment takes about 3-4 hours and is usually performed three times a week. Home hemodialysis might be done more frequently but for shorter sessions. Peritoneal dialysis is typically done daily, either in several exchanges throughout the day (CAPD) or using a machine while you sleep (APD).

What is a kidney transplant?

A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure to place a healthy kidney from a living or deceased donor into a person whose kidneys no longer function properly. It’s considered the treatment of choice for kidney failure when possible, as it can allow for greater freedom and a better quality of life than dialysis.

Lifestyle Questions

Dietary recommendations vary based on the stage of CKD and individual needs, but often include limiting sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and protein. Working with a renal dietitian is essential to create a personalized meal plan that helps manage your condition while ensuring adequate nutrition.

Can I exercise while on dialysis?

Yes, regular physical activity is encouraged for most dialysis patients. Exercise can help improve energy levels, muscle strength, heart health, and overall well-being. It’s important to consult with your healthcare team to develop an appropriate exercise plan based on your specific condition and limitations.
